256. Mechanical Singing Bird Automaton (Continental, ca. 20th Century)

The brass birdcage contains a miniature bird with red and black feathers. He is perched on a stand which is decorated with small leaves and berries and a felt base. Cage is mounted to a gilt base with beadwork and floral repousse border. In good working order. Measures approx. 11"H. Base is unmarked.

Jaquet-Droz, manufacturers of complex clocks n La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, invented the mechanical singing bird movement in about 1780. This movement imitated the movements of birds and reproduced authentic birdsong. It contained a leather bellows and piston whistle assembly and are still made today using similar methods.
