371. Christine Naranjo (Native American, 1891-1980, Santa Clara Pueblo)

A hand-built black pottery vessel, approx. 6"H x 5" in diameter at the widest point, signed on the undersigned "Christina Naranjo, Santa Clara", with a deeply carved avaynu motif on the sides.

The famous black pottery of New Mexico comes from two pueblos, Santa Clara and San Ildefonso, two neighboring villages, laying along the Rio Grande river just north of Santa Fe. Santa Clara pottery is similar to its neighbor's, except the typical ware is much thicker, with deeply carved designs made into the polished walls of the pottery. The color is usually black, although a large number of pots are polished red.
