139. Saint Clair Augustin Mulholland (American, b. 1840)

French fishing boats in a stormy sea. Watercolor on paper, signed in the lower left corner, matted and framed under glass, sight size approx. 11-1/2" x 23", with framing overall approx. 23" x 35".

"St. Clair Augustin Mulholland as a young man painted scenes on window shades (a fad of the times). He was a Medal of Honor recipient in the Civil War. General Mulholland authored a book about the "... 116th Pennsylvania Regiment ....." (Reprinted in 1997). In the 1880's he went to London and then Paris to study and paint. Most of his paintings are watercolors ($200-$700), some oils ($1,000-up). I believe, many of his works are listed as by "Samuel" or "Sydney" Mulholland a "British artist." A comparison of signatures, subjects, and style all point to the conclusion that these are works by St. Clair Augustin Mulholland, American artist." askart.com
