| 249. A Beautiful Chinese Silk Embroidery, ca. Late 19th Century
Silk on silk embroidery rendering traditional Chinese design elements such as peony flowers (symbol for nobility and value and national emblem of China), fu (bats, Chinese symbols for luck), and wàns (left-facing swastika sign, a Buddist symbol for "all" and "eternity"). Beautifully executed design in shaded satin stitch features three floral medallions over geometric lattice ground center-field and meandering floral motifs along the perimeter. Please note two of the corners and a medallion bear printed red design beneath the embroidery. This piece has been backed with cotton support. Chinese characters on verso.
