| 214. Wayne Thiebaud (American, b. 1920)
"Black and White Suckers". Etching and aquatint on Rives paper, ca. 1971, 3/50, signed in pencil in the lower right margin and dated 1971, and numbered in the lower left margin, matted and framed under glass. The paper measures approx. 22" x 26-1/4", the plate measures approx. 17-1/2" x 21-3/4", and with the framing overall the piece measures approx. 26-1/4" x 29". Wayne Thiebaud gained national and international recognition in the 1960s by reviving the still-life tradition within a contemporary context. His celebration of banal objects from everyday life, such as cakes, sandwiches and lollipops stimulate the attention, and perhaps appetites, of museum visitors worldwide. In Black and White Suckers, Thiebaud challenges traditional notions of subject matter, arrangement, color and scale. The grand scale of his images ironically monumentalize common objects of little importance to contemporary society. The still life has become a vehicle through which the artist can experiment in design, texture, shading and movement. -The Ackland Collection 4,000/6,000 Sold $6,670.00 back to catalog |
