| 255. An Antique Regina Musical Box
An antique Regina musical box, measuring approx. 37-3/4"H x 30"W x 11-3/4"D. The upright disc Regina is contained in a beautiful cabinet with a glass front door, the front and sides clad in inlaid wood veneers, and with brasses for ornamentation. The door of the box has case fitted with a coin slot mechanism and the workings have been electrified. Inside the case is lined with a French blue soft textured fabric. Below the upright disc is a setting made to appear as a mirrored stage with metal relief ornamentation surrounding the stage and panels of mirror behind. There are musical putti in metal relief at the top. On the stage are three porcelain ballerinas with porcelain dangling legs, in satin dresses that bob and whirl when the mechanism is activated. There is a small electric light bulb at either side of the stage. The musical box is in working order and comes with one disc, approx. 15-1/2" in diameter with the patent dates 1889 and 1893. Regina Music Box Company, Rahway, NJ, 1892-1921. Regina ws the largest maker of disc musical boxes in America. They are said to have sold approximately 100,000 from the late 19th Century until the mid-teens of the 20th Century. They also made cylinder phonographs, combination disc musical box/discphotographs, and musical clocks, and mechanical pianos.
