| 301. An Elaborate American Coin Silver Urn by Bailey & Company, Philadelphia, ca. 1846-1859
An elaborate 19th century American coin silver lidded urn designed with rocaille decorations and stylized flowers and foliage in low relief over gracious bulbous body. Stylized wood handles are the highlights of this beautiful urn. Please note the figural finial on the bell-shhaped lid. The urn rests on a flared undulated base with four rocaille design feet. Front medallion monogrammed "MW". Base stamped with "Bailey & Co." manufacturer's mark and "136 Chestnut Street" address, two lion passant cartouches, one jaguar passant cartouche, date letter "S" within an oval cartouche, and a shield cartouche. Same marks are found on the urn insert. Overall with the lid measures approx. 16-1/2"T x 10"W with the handles. Bailey & Company were the predecessors of the Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co. "On September 20th, 1832 Joseph Trowbridge Bailey and Andrew B. Kitchen formed a partnership under the firm name of Bailey & Kitchen for the manufacture and sale of silverware, jewelry and kindred articles and began business at 136 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Mr. Kitchen died in 1840 but the business was continued under the same name until 1846, when E.W. Bailey, Joseph Bailey's brother, and Jeremiah Robbins and James Gallaher formed a new partnership under the name of Bailey & Company and continued business at the same location until 1859 when they constructed a new building at 819 Chestnut Street".
