A Russian lacquer covered box, approx. 3" in diameter x 1-3/8"H, in black high-gloss lacquer, with the top pictorially decorated with a man and a firebird in polychrome with scrolling gilt accents. The box is marked on the bottom "Mstera N. K." in Russian. The interior of the box is vermillion lacquer.

759. A Carved Burlwood and Tortoise shell Snuff Box with a Medallion of Napoleon on the Lid


A carved burlwood snuff box, of circular form measuring approx. 3-3/8" in diameter x 1-1/2"H, with the interior fitted with tortoise shell, and the lid with a low relief design surrounding a metal medallion depicting the young Napoleon in relief with a metal rim and a domed clear protector cover. The medallion has lettering worked around the perimeter that is relatively illegible due to the soils on the underside of the dome.

761. A Lot of Four Snuff Boxes


A lot of four snuff boxes, the first an oval shaped silver box with a hinged lid with the exterior entirely embellished with engraved designs and an initial engraved in the center, measuring approx. 3-1/8" x 1-3/4' x 3/4"H, with hallmarks on the underside of the lid and the remains of two labels reading "Birmingham, 1793" and "Samuel Pember". The second is an elongated oval silver box with a hinged lid, the sides with a leaf and dart motif and the lid with a beaded then a reed and ribbon rim, and with initials engraved in the center, measuring approx. 2-1/2"W x 1"D x 3/8"H, marked with hallmarks on the underside. The next is a circular box in worn silver plate finish, measuring approx. 2" in diameter x 1"H, with an applied foliate decoration on the top and a three-leaf clover in the center, with the hinge embellished on the outside by a small flower, and with a bale for hanging, with no marks found. The last is an oval box with polished agate for the top and the bottom, held together by a simple tooled brass side and rim with hinge, measuring 1-7/8" x 1-1/2" x 5/8"H.

A lot of three metal snuff boxes with hinged lids, the first in copper in an oval boat shape, with the initials "C.E.B. 1784" lightly scratched into the lid, measuring approx. 3-3/8" x 1-3/4" x 1"H. The second has a heavily dented hand wrought appearance, in an oval shape, measuring approx. 3-1/2"W x 2-1/4"D x 3/4"H, with no markings found. The last is a brass box with a hinged lid, in an oval shape measuring approx. 3-1/8"W x 2-1/8"D x 1"H, with the exterior engraved with irregular squiggles and a few letters in a random fashion.

A lot of three snuff boxes with hinged lids, the first a folk art box with a sliding lid, carved in pine with a brown finish, with stars and designs carved in the sides and the word "Snuff" carved in the lid, measuring approx. 4-1/2" x 3" x 1-3/4"H. The second is a papier mache box in a simple black lacquer finish with a border around the lid with corner ornaments, and with a hand painted picture of a traveler with a staff and a pack on his back painted in the center, measuring approx. 3-3/8"W x 2-1/8"H. The last is a bean-shaped papier mache box, measuring 3-1/4"W x 2-1/4" x 1".

764. A Lot of Four Horn Snuff Boxes


A lot of four horn snuff boxes with hinged lids, the first in the shape of the tip of a horn with an oval lid with a piece of cork affixed to the underside, measuring approx. 2-3/4"L x 2" at the widest point. The second a box made of horn with a horn veneer inset into the lid, measuring approx. 3-1/4" x 1-1/2" x 1"H. The third in a pillow shape fitted together with small brads around the rim, with a hatch-like hinged lid in the center, measuring approx. 3-1/2" x 2" x 1-1/8"H. The last is a rectangular form with oval sides, fitted together with pins and metal bands, the hinged lid attached to a piece of wood on the underside with metal pins and with a curvilinear metal plate pinned to the top for monogramming, measuring approx. 3-7/8" x 2-1/8" x 1-3/8"H. This last box has a label inside that reads "Horn Snuff Box. Spain, c. 1840".

A lot of two snuff boxes with figurative decorations, the first an oriental lacquer box with a hinged lid, with a scene in gilt on the lid with a building and three figures surrounded by foliage, with the faces and hands in a naturalistic color, measuring 3" x 2-1/8" x 1-1/4"H. The second is a rectangular shaped box with ovoid ends measuring approx. 3-1/4" x 2" x 1"H, of carved wood held together by metal bands, pins and hinges, with the hatch-door lid inset with a small brass figure holding a horn.

A lot of three papier mache snuff boxes with hinged lids, the first an early 19th Century rectangular box with a scene painted on the lid of hunters and a dog in a landscape, measuring approx. 3" x 2" x 7/8"H. The second is also a 19th Century rectangular box, with the lid in barely detectable tortoise shell and decorated with inlaid metal designs and mother of pearl chips, measuring approx, 3-1/2' x 1-7/8" x 1-1/16"H. The last a small rectangular shaped box with ovoid sides, fitted together with metal bands and with the top decorated by inlaid pieces of metal and incised designs, with a hinged hatch-door lid, measuring approx. 2-3/8"W x 1-5/8"D x 5/8"H.
