578. Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Compote in the Grape Motif


Designed by Georg Jensen in 1918, this Fruit Bowl No. 263 stands approx. 7-1/2"T with a 7-3/16" diameter bowl. Correctly hallmarked on bottom. Flared base with twirling stem surmounted by a round bowl, adorned with hanging grapes. The compote weighs approx. 19.5 troy oz. This is one of the most popular pieces of hollowware that Jensen designed; it was originally made in four sizes. An example of Compote No. 263 is held in the collection of The National Swedish Art Museum, Stockholm.

A fancy Victorian inkwell set in silver metal, with a rectangular base set up on scrolling feet, and with an array of relief decorations and incised decorations on all surfaces. The plateau has an applied ornament for monogramming at the front. On the top of the plateau are two receptacles for ink (one lacking the glass and metal insert) two brackets that would hold a pen, and a central statuette of a classical lady carrying a scroll and a sword. Overall the piece measures approx. 8-1/2"H x 9-1/2" x 5-1/2". No markings were found other than the letters "MS" impressed into the bottom of one foot. There is a small rectangular opening in the front of the base at the right side, corresponding to what appears to be half of a hinge on the underside, indicating the piece may have been attached to a larger base at some time.

The bowl has a simple 1" flared foot and a pierced and relief pattern 1-1/2" wide lip. The lid has incised surface details and a lobbed knob at the top. The widest point of the lip measures approx. 11-5/8" in diameter and the piece stands approx. 4-1/2"H.

The butter pats measure approx. 3-1/4" in diameter and the salts 2" in diameter at the widest point. There are six of each contained in a fabric covered hinged box with ivory fabric interior. The box measures approx. 7-3/4" x 10-3/4" x 2-1/2"H. The silver pieces weigh approx. 5.37 troy oz. total.

A German silver serving set, not matched, consisting of an ornately designed pierced fork and scoop. Each is richly designed with pierced relief patterns with figures, animals, flourishes and architectural elements. The bowl of the scoop has an oval center with a village scene etched inside with two people fishing in a stream, surrounded by meandering flowers and vines with birds. The scoop measures 8-1/4" long and is marked "Germany 800" on the back of the handle. The fork measures 8"L and has hallmarks and "Germany" on the front of the bowl. It may have had a gold wash at one time that is now very worn. The total weight of the two pieces is 4.80 troy oz.

The body of the ewer is worked in relief with bows and swags of flowers and the lid is also decorated with a floral relief. There are hallmarks on the underside. Second, a small round coaster with a reticulated edge, a worn center scene of woman with a baby satyr, measuring approx. 4" in diameter. Last, a liquor cask on ball feet with ornate scene and rococo decorations on sides, with a removable lid with bonnet shape. The cask is hallmarked on the interior, and measures approx. 6-1/4"T. It weighs approx. 21.7 troy oz. total weight.
