| 198. Marc Chagall (Russian/French, 1887-1985)
"Paradise" from "Drawings From The Bible." Lithograph on Arches paper, numbered 8/50 in pencil in the lower left margin, signed in the lower right margin, M233, with the image size approx. 14-1/2" x 10-1/2", the paper measures approx. 20-1/2" x 15". The print is matted with a linen mat with a gilded duplex liner and framed in a gilded-style frame, measuring overall approx. 23-5/8" x 18-1/4". Published by "Verve" in 1960, this is one of twenty-four color lithographs that Chagall designed for the book, "Dessins pour la Bible". The body of work depicted the woman's involvement in biblical history and the struggle with nature. The green image of the goat is a pictorialization of Satan as an envious creature. The voluptuous Eve is shown in muted complimentary colors at the left, above which floats the face of Adam with his hand holding the apple poised at the moment of decision. 2,000/4,000 Sold $8,222.50 back to catalog |
