896. A Desert Set By Clarice Cliff (British, 1899-1972)

A hand painted ceramic desert set in the "Farmhouse" pattern by Clarice Cliff, each piece marked on the bottom "Fantqastique" Hand Painted Bizarre by Clarice Cliff...Newport Pottery...England" and also stamped "Registratin Applied For". The set consists of a small serving dish, 9-1/2" x 11", six teacups, 3-5/8" x 2-3/8", six 5-3/4" diameter saucers and six 8" diameter desert plates. Each cream color ceramic piece is hand decorated in yellow, orange, red, black and emerald green, with the cups, serving plate and desert plates embellished with a charming stylized scene with a country cottage and trees.

Clarice Cliff was born on January 20th 1899 in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Clarice started work at the age of 13 in 'The Potteries', and moved to the AJ Wilkinson's pottery factory in 1916, where she was soon given her own studio. The famous 'Bizarre' wares were launched 1927. The factory continued to produce pottery bearing Clarice's name until 1964.
