579. A Fancy Victorian Inkwell Set

A fancy Victorian inkwell set in silver metal, with a rectangular base set up on scrolling feet, and with an array of relief decorations and incised decorations on all surfaces. The plateau has an applied ornament for monogramming at the front. On the top of the plateau are two receptacles for ink (one lacking the glass and metal insert) two brackets that would hold a pen, and a central statuette of a classical lady carrying a scroll and a sword. Overall the piece measures approx. 8-1/2"H x 9-1/2" x 5-1/2". No markings were found other than the letters "MS" impressed into the bottom of one foot. There is a small rectangular opening in the front of the base at the right side, corresponding to what appears to be half of a hinge on the underside, indicating the piece may have been attached to a larger base at some time.
