914. An Elaborate and Large Porcelain Jardiniere, French. ca. early 20th century

An elaborate large glazed porcelain jardiniere, in the shape of an urn standing on it's own platform base supported by four mythical beasties above which are four putti. The platform is supported by four gilt feet. The beasties are glazed in the same blue as a great deal of the vase and base, with gilt accents. The neck of the urn is decorated with multicolor florals as well as the inside bottom of the vase. The putti are glazed in naturalistic colors. Additionally the beasties are attached to eachother and to the challice by a gilded chain. The jardiniere is marked on the underside in cobalt blue under clear glaze with the maker's mark (probably Edme Samson & Cie). This piece measures approx. 14"T x 14" in diameter.

Edmé Samson & Cie has achieved notoriety as a faker, yet his Parisian factory survived for more than 150 years openly selling reproductions of the great porcelain of the past. Samson’s best pieces are today brilliant productions in their own right, and are sought after, mostly because they are highly decorative.
