16. "The Adoration of the Virgin and Child", Cuzco School, Peru, ca. 17th/18th Century

Polychrome pigments on canvas, measuring approx. 94" x 72", not framed. Mary is seen holding the infant Jesus while a figure, possibly St. Rose of Lima, presents them with roses. A host of angels fly above and also distribute red flowers. The figures are situated in a leafy landscape with a classical building in the distance at the right. Spanish Baroque art in the New World followed closely to that of the Iberian countries. Paintings combined indigenous decorative forms with European-style figures and small scale, soft colours, doll-like features, and a tender, intimate overall expression. Provenance: Ex-collection of Doris Cameron (d. 2006) of Fresno CA. This item entered her collection of Peruvian History prior to 1990 and had been shown and vetted by several museum curators between 1988-98. Chinese cabinet, top shelf.
