17. Cuzco School, Peru, ca. 17th/18th Century

Madonna and Child. Oil on canvas, 25-1/2" x 20-1/2", depicting the rosy-cheeked Mary and Jesus with radiating halos surrounding them. Each has a clear influence from European styles, and Mary's garments are edged in a pretty decorative gilt pigment that matches the halos. Spanish Baroque art in the New World followed closely to that of the Iberian countries. Paintings combined indigenous decorative forms with European-style figures and small scale, soft colours, doll-like features, and a tender, intimate overall expression. Provenance: Ex-collection of Doris Cameron (d. 2006) of Fresno CA. This item entered her collection of Peruvian History prior to 1990 and had been shown and vetted by several museum curators between 1988-98. Chinese cabinet, top shelf.
