An Archaistic Roman-style emerald green glass vase with cinnabar glass handles and foot, measuring approx. 4-7/8"H, x 1" in diameter at the widest point.

32. A Group of Archaistic Egyptian Style Glazed Faience Canopic Jars


A group of Archaistic glazed earthenware jars of barrel form featuring figural lids, brown pigment for script and figure highlights, and remnants of turquoise glaze. Each measures approx. 6"T x 3"W. During mummification the internal organs were removed and placed in four containers. These containers often have human or animal-headed lids. The word, canopic, comes from the Greek name of the local god of Canopus in the Nile delta, who was represented as a human-headed pot. Canopic jars can be made of limestone, alabaster, wood, pottery, or even cartonnage. The heads of the canopic jar represented the Four Sons of Horus. Imsety: The human headed guardian of the liver, Qebekh-sennuef: The falcon headed guardian of the intestines, Hapy: The baboon headed guardian of the lungs, Duamutef: The jackal or wild dog headed guardian of the stomach.

A diverse group of terracotta fragments and heads, some of which had been identified as possibly of Teotihuacan origin. There are fourteen pieces, each with a glued-on display hook. The sizes range from 1" to 2-1/2" tall. This lot is accompanied by a letter from the Cleveland Museum of Art.

A Turkish glazed ceramic tile, ca. 1525-1530, measuring approx. 9-3/4"x 9-3/4" x 5/8". Very similar tiles were used in the Topkapi Sarayi Sunnet Odasi (circa. 1527-28). Around that time Iznik adopted turquoise in its palette.

A lot of two Native American flint tools, the first measuring approx. 3-3/4" x 1-3/8" x 1/4" and the other 3-3/4" x 2-3/4" x 1/2", both fashioned in flattened seed shapes with sharpened edges. The larger tool is a grey color and the smaller is tan with "Wolf Lake Ill" written in ink on the side.
