An ivory carving of the Nativity, with God The Father in the clouds above with rays of light coming from behind. Below is a fragment of an architectural detail which looks like the corner of a building. Mary and Joseph and the Baby Jesus in the manger are situated on a shelf below, with a swirling pierced relief carving below. This piece is very delicately carved and detailed. Overall the ivory measures approx. 5"H x 4-1/2"W x 1"D. The shadowbox frame with glass measures 9" x 7-1/2".

A pretty pietra dura paper weight from Italy, with a central carved shell cameo surrounded by a floral frame with Forget Me Nots, and an inlay embellished rectangular shape overall measuring approx. 4-3/4" x 3-1/2" x 5/8". Below the cameo is the word "Venezia", also done in inlay. The materials include various stones and colored glass.

1211. A 19th Century Papier Mache "Les Tres Muses" Box and a Black Lacquer Snuff Box


The circular box with a removable lid was made in papier mache with an engraved print affixed to the top of the lid. The engraving depicts three muses with their classic attributes. The box measures approx. 3½" in diameter and 1"T. And an elongated black lacquer snuff box with a hinged lid, decorated wiht a floral spray and dot motif; interior with foil lining. Not marked, measures approx. 1"H x 1½"W x 3"L.

An enameled platter with a figurative scene on the inside depicting peasant musicians, signed at the lower left "P. Soyer", in black background, with the verso also in plain black enamel. A Neccesaire box veneered in exotic two-tone wood panels, further enhanced with brass outline inlays, with the hinged lid of the box is fitted with a mirror, the interior with compartments and a partial etui. The box also has two secret drawers that can be opened only by pressing disguised buttons within the main compartment. Design patented by S. Morgan, London. Sold by Asprey, London. Overall it measures approx. 7-1/2"H x 12"L x 9"W.

A leather traveling accessory case with the interior walls of the case with a hinged lid and monogramed "E. N. C." lined with silver travel accessories including; a garment brush, mirror, hairbrush, and many others. One piece is missing. Hallmarks on the silver include a silversmith's initials "CAGA" for Chas and Geo Asprey, lion passant facing left, a leopard's head, and number "1" within an upside down shield cartouche. Overall the case measures approx. 5"H x 9"W x 10"L.

An ivory sewing etui (or necessaire) circa 1886. Each piece is precisely fitted into an carved ivory case with a hinged lid and an overall very smooth finish. The set is missing a needle. Most of the pieces are hallmarked with the German silver 800 mark, crown and crescent. Included inside are sterling silver sewing necessities: scissors, needle case, thimble, bodkin, punch and a knife. Overall it measures approx. 5" x 2-1/2" x 1".

A regal lacquered brass figure of a lion, bolted to an architectural pedestal on four scrolling legs. Each of the two parts has the name "John Bate" cast in raised letters, in a mirror image, on the inside. The piece measures approx. 14" x 8" x 9"H, and was once part of a fireplace fixture. A very attractive and striking decorative accessory, originally purchased from the Ellen Stirn Gallery, Cleveland OH.

This pair of cast iron Punch and Judy doorstops are cold painted in polychrome pigments, probably by a lady of a house, as these were originally sold unpainted. Mr. Punch is a well known character in folklore and popular culture, with origins dating back to about 1300, in the Commedia dell 'Arte brought by troupes of actors from Italy to the rest of Europe. The Italian story book figure of a Pulcinella was transformed into Mr. Punch in England, who was joined by a wife, Judy, and by 1700 the Punch and Judy show had become an English tradition. These doorstops measure approx. 12"T and 11"T.

An ornately styled collection of fireplace equipment, including a three-panel folding firescreen in cast bronze, with a relief pattern on all front surfaces, scalloped tops surmounted by cast pierced decorations with scrolling foliate patterns surrounding a bearded face, and four finials at the top corners, each panel measuring approx. 17"W x 26"H. The second part is a pair of rococo gilt bronze chenets with cherubs holding bunches of grapes seated within meandering foliate shapes, measuring approx. 19-1/4"H x 11"W x 6"D. The last is a fireplace tool set with stand made in cast brass with steel rods, measuring approx. 35"H.

A wrought iron fireplace set, consisting of a hand-wrought firescreen and andirons. The andirons measure 48"H x 15"W and are fashioned with a fleur de lis at the top, scrolling and twisted stems with trefoil motif decoration, dragons' heads and animal paws. The firescreen has coordinating motifs with fleur de lis finials at the top and measures 52"H x 57"W. These architecturally grand pieces were made in the late-19th-early 20th Century, and must have adorned an equally monumental fireplace.
