Northern France, Picardie? then to Sion Abbey in Switzeland by 1390. Ex-sale of Foyle Collection, Christie's, 2000. With marginal notes in a light grey silverpoint in a 14th Century hand, added doubtlessly at Sion Abbey after 1390. Also with a few brown guide letters in the margins opposite the chapter openings to assist the scriber. Red and blue pigment on top edge in fine lettering. One loose sheet with a bi-fold (2 sheets) Three total, two columns of Latin text on both sides, each sheet approx. 5-3/4" x 3-3/4".

Hand painted vellum pages with mirrored Brugeois scroll-work depicting strawberries and flowers. Two columns each with 28 lines of text in Latin in Angular Gothic Script. Lettering in red and blue pigment with burnished gold intinials. Verso also with like text, less decoration but still with gold work. The appearance of the strawberry indicates that the illuminating was done by a Benedictine monk. Each measuring approx. 13-1/2" x 10-1/2".

Illuminated manuscript using vegetable dye pigments and gold on paper. The painting depicts a courtyard scene with traditional attention to architectural detail. Text panels above and below the painting. Floral border depicts meandering blossoms and foliage with an abundance of birds. Note two cartouches within the border on the right. Verso depicts manuscript in black pigment with red highlights. Not framed, measures approx. 14-1/2" x 9-3/4".

Mexico City: Galeria de Arte Misrachi, 1967. Limited publisher's edition of 100 exaples, this being numbered 69 and signed by Rufino Tamayo, Fernando Lopez Valencia, the binder, Francisco Graue, the co-editor, and German Torres, the printer, on the colophon. First edition with both Spanish and English text, the later following. Artist binding by Lopez Valencia, signed in gilt on back board. The bidding is soft, full tan calf with gilt tooling; cover with screen print title and paint splash/stroke in mustard and black. Top edge of paper gilt and with embossed "brick" pattern. Raffia endpapers and publisher's raffia board slipcase. Near fine, light scuffs to leather.

One of 7 copies bound by Angela James, Fellow of Designer Bookbinders, to her own design, signed and dated, from an edition of 225. Introduction by Simon Brett, article on Stanley Lawrence by Ian Mortimer and an article on The Society in the 1950's by Frank Martin. 18p, 40 illustrated pages. 11-1/2" x 8-1/4". Engraved title page by Michael Renton. Set in Van Dijk, printed in blue and black on Zerkall mould-made paper. Bound in an abstract design by Angela James in full red morocco with onlyas of black, yellow, green. pink and turquoise leathers on the covers, lettering in gilt on the front cover; green and bright pink end-papers, silk bands of pink, green, black and yellow. Black morocco doublures with red and yellow leather onl;ays. Signed by James on the lower board. New York: Laurentian Press, 1902. Limited edition of 110, this being numbered 57, printed on Whatman hand-made paper. This book was designed, arranged and printed under the direction of Arthur H. Hahlo and George S. Hellman. 20 uncut sheets, decorated with floral and figurative printing, each page beautifully hand colored in watercolors. Signed custom art binding by Angela James. Black and yellow fly leaves with hand-made paper ends and sewn linen tapes with silk headbands. Binding of black and yellow goatskin, Inlays of black goatskin and white calfskin. Onlays of blue,and pink goatskin and red sheepskin. Border onlays of cream calf. Lettered in gold on front and back boards; yellow goatskin doublures. Offered in a black buckram covered drop-back box, lined with yellow felt and leather label with lettering. Fine side from fourth printed page having a small 1/2 tear in lower margin.

1298. "Engraved in the Wood", A collection of wood engravings by George Mackley with an appreciation by Ruari McLean


London: Two-Horse Press, 1968. No. 132 of 300 copies printed, signed by the artist. Designed and printed in three colors by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press. With woodcuts in orange throughout text. The 68 plates are printed on fine paper. Issued in a box with engravings unbound, the text in wrappers. The whole has been made into sections and sewn, with the first three illustrations inserted within the text to act as "frontispieces" to the various sections. Endpapers of pale yellow Ingres paper, headbands of green and orange. Bound in dark green Chieftain morocco with a design of four fallings leaves running across both boards and the spine, in orange and tan leather, inlaid and onlaid. The veins of the leaves are tooled in gold. Tan lable at the bottom of the spine with a single line gold border, lettered. Binding signed CLH 86. Offered in a tav cloth calm shell case with applied leather title with gold embossed lettering. Fine.

New York Vincent FitzGerald & Company 1989. One of 50 copies only, this being number 6, on hand-made Dieu Donne' cotton paper, signed by the artist on the colophon, page size: 10 x 13-1/2". Printed by Dan Keleher and Bruce Chandler at Wild Carrot Letterpress in Dante type designed by Mardesteig and set by Michael Bixler. Book is hand-collaged using specially made papers, some with flower petals in the paper, Japanese laces, silver tea paper, and it explores several graphic media, including pochoir and etch and also contains a number of original watercolors. Bound in grey linen over boards stamped in two colors with specially made papers in grey and lime green, fine. Published on the 75th anniversary of the writing of Joyce's prose poem, which was first published in 1968 in a facsimile of the original manuscript. Fine.
