239. Edris Eckhardt (American, 1905-1998)

The Tortoise and the Hare. Cast ceramic with polychrome glazes, signed on the back of the base under the glaze, "Federal Art Project Cleveland, Ohio" written in the hollow interior, measuring approx. 5-3/4"H x 6"W x 3"D. Early in the race, the scoundrel hare appears to be taking the lead i front of the slow and steady tortoise, while a buzzard on a stump spectates.

Cleveland Heights artist Edris Eckhardt developed a new process which was used for most of the 20 Oxford (School) ceramics. She and other fellow artists created ceramics based on classic childrens stories. Her 1937 Alice in Wonderland storybook series was exhibited at the World's Fair in Paris. She taught ceramics at the Cleveland School of Art and was this region's Supervisor for Sculpture for the Federal Arts Project.
