251. Earl J. Neff (American, 1903-1993)

"The Bull". Oil on masonite, signed in the lower right corner, framed in a white painted frame, the masonite board size measuring approx. 32" x 43", and with the framing overall approx. 35" x 47". There is a label affixed to the verso from the Exhibition of Contemporary American Art New York World's Fair 1939 and a Cleveland Museum of Art Registrar's tag #TR6077/205. A monumental image of a bull on a weathervane, dramatically enhanced by the color palette and viewpoint.

Earl J. Neff (1903-1993) was a successful Cleveland artist. He is best known as a W.P.A. muralist, and was Director of the Federal Arts Project in Cleveland in 1937. His mural frieze of the History of U.S. Locomotives was designed for the Engineer's Building, and when that building was demolished in 1989 the mural was saved and reinstalled in the Gund Arena. (Now the "Q") Neff was a teacher and illustrator as well award-winning fine artist in many media. His fashion art appeared in The Plain Dealer, and he served as art director of SOHIO Magazine.
