242. Earl J. Neff (American, 1903-1993)

Lunette Design. Oil on a thin wood veneer paper in colors, signed at the lower left, matted and framed under glass, measuring approx. 10-3/4" x 24-1/4" sight size, and with the framing overall approx. 19-1/4" x 29-1/4". There is a hand-written note on the back of the dust cover that reads "After graduating from the Cleveland School of Art, I attended Wednesday evening classes at John Huntington Polytechnic Institute, for five years. Henry G. Keller, Dean of Art, taught Advanced Design. This lunet design was made as a class project. I created and chose my subject. This is done on a paper with a very thin wood veneer. Had it not been for this class I would never have created seventeen murals. Four were in the Cleveland Hopkins Airport."

Earl J. Neff (1903-1993) was a successful Cleveland artist. He is best known as a W.P.A. muralist, and was Director of the Federal Arts Project in Cleveland in 1937. His mural frieze of the History of U.S. Locomotives was designed for the Engineer's Building, and when that building was demolished in 1989 the mural was saved and reinstalled in the Gund Arena. This dramatic mural illustrates the history of early 20th century industrial glory and is a popular focal point in today's central city entertainment complex.
