| 938. A Grand Tour Jeanne d'Arc Figure Silver Seal, Italian, Rome, ca. 1815-1870
A Grand Tour silver figural piece of Jeanne d'Arc holding her shield over her head with her left hand and holding a what appears to be a flag in her right, the whole figure rests on a two-tiered pedestal. Bloodstone seal with an "M" script monogram. Papal State hallmark: mitre and cross, purity degree 889/1000, used from 1815 to September 20, 1870 (hallmark # 156: Argenti Italiani dell'Ottocento vol. 1- V.Donaver - R. Dabbene). Weight approx. 4.5 troy oz. Measures approx. 4-1/2"T. It was common for noblemen in the 18th and 19th Century to complete their education with a period of European travel: the so-called 'Grand Tour'. By undertaking the Tour, young men learned about the politics, culture, and art of neighboring lands. The tour was also intended to "round out" a young person's education and to allow them to experience something of the world before "settling down" to business. Many fine objects were brought back from the tour as a sign of status. 300/600 Sold $540.50 back to catalog |
