472. Nikolai Ivanovich Liberich (Russian, 1828-1883)

A majestic cast bronze statue of a rearing bear on a base with tree trunks, seated on a black polished marble base, with a black patina. The foundry name (Eplel) is impressed into the mound base, and a statement is also impressed into the base stating that "This bear was killed by the Russian Emperor (Alexander III) at the place named Apsetsa, March 9, 1865" in cyrillic. The statue measures approx. 24" x 16" x 12" with the marble base.

Liberich studied at the Academy of St. Petersburg. He specialized exclusively in animal sculpture and was very prolific in his production. Several museums in Russia maintain works in their permanent collection, and was known to have done other commissions for Alexander III.
