A pair of Dutch straight back chairs with elaborate ivory inlay decorations, measuring approx. 18"W x 17"D x 45-1/2"H. These unusual chairs feature a turned and carved variation of a block and spindle, a gracefully carved "H; shaped stretcher, flat seat with geometric ivory inlay and four mother of pearl discs inset, with the apron also decorated with ivory inlay, the front in a beautiful pierced foliate design with classical faces at the center. The back rails are block and spindle, with a carved splat with intricately worked ivory inlay, with a beautiful woman standing in the center of an architectural arch, with a face etched at the keystone, and with each siderail inset in three places in ivory, four with rosettes and two with classical winged figures. The matching chair has the image of a cavalier in the center of the arch. The ivory inlay is etched with designs with a dark pigment in the lines besides the silhouetted cut-outs. The carved wood portion of the chairs is in an ebony tone stain. 3,800/4,500 back to catalog |
