153. Lucas Van Leyden (Dutch, 1494-1533)

The Baptism of Christ in the Jordan River, ca. 1510. Copper plate engraving on laid paper with watermark, with the artist's insignia near the lower right edge, the paper size 5-5/8" x 7-1/8". Trimmed margins. Purple collectors' stamp on verso with pencil inventory number. Catalogue Rais;Hollstein, 40.

Lucas van Leyden is considered to be the first great Renaissance master printmaker produced by the Netherlands. He was largely influenced by Albrecht Durer's works toward the end of the first decade of the sixteenth century. In 1521, Lucas and Durer met during Durer's trip to the Netherlands, winning the support of the new Regent for the renewal of his pension. (Emperor Maximilian I). van Leyden combined Netherlands' traditional stylistic approach with Durer's inspiration and the Italian style of Jan Gossaert, a style that dominated Netherlandish printmaking for an entire century.
