255. Paul Bough Travis (American, 1891-1975)

"Edge of the Clearing, Congo Forest". Lithograph on paper, signed and dated in pencil in the lower right margin, 1933, titled in pencil in the lower left margin, the image size 8-1/8" x 10-3/4", and the paper size 12-7/8" x 18". The print is matted in a black silk mat (acidic) and framed in a silver frame under glass, overall measuring 16-3/4" x 19".

Born in West Point, Ohio near the border of Pennsylvania, he is closely associated with the watercolor tradition of Northeast Ohio. He graduated from the Cleveland School of Art, served in the Army in World War I and remained in Europe for several years where he taught art at American universities in Europe. In 1920, he returned to Ohio to teach at the Cleveland School, renamed in 1940 the Cleveland Institute of Art, and remained there until 1948. In 1927, he traveled extensively in Africa and used that subject matter for many years in his painting.
