Carved mottled pink sandstone head mounted on a black metal stand. Stylized hair and ear ornamentation and heavily-lidded eyes. From the 1st through the 5th century, sculptors at Mathura were laying the foundation for Indian religious art, using the easily identified mottled red sandstone.
