| 48. Unknown Artist (Continental School, 19th Century)
A delicately painted tondo on board of the Madonna and Child surrounded by a cluster of beautiful young figures, two of which are holding a dainty crown over Mary's head. Two others offer an open book and hold an inkwell in which Mary is dipping a quill. The painting is rendered in minute detail in the Italian manner by an accomplished, but unidentified artist. It measures approx. 6" in diameter and with the framing overall approx. 11" x 11". It is painted on a heavily gessoed circular board, and is probably executed in egg tempera with gilt detailing. Note the lovely handling of the veil floating over Mary's head. 200/400 Sold $448.50 back to catalog |
