| 87. Lucy Drake Marlow (American, 1890-1978)
Pittsburgh. Oil on pebbleboard, signed in the lower right corner, framed in a slender period frame, the board measuring approx. 12" x 16", and overall with the frame 13-1/4" x 17". The is a lovely hazy scene of the city just before dawn, seen from the viewpoint of the rooftops with smoke and mist rising. A large cathedral dominates the middle ground, and the ever-present swell of the hills surrounding the city occupy the distant ground. Born in Erie, PA, Marlow received her art training in New York at the Art Students League and at the Carnegie Institute. She continued her studies in Provincetown and established herself as an academic figure and portrait painter in the Pittsburgh area, fulfilling painting commissions and teaching art classes in the 1920s. In 1927 Marlow moved to Tucson because of the frail health of her daughter. In Tucson she became associated with the Tucson Fine Arts Association. She was a member of the Hoosier Salon, Pittsburgh Art Association, and the Tucson Fine Arts Association.
