159. Unknown Artist: A Pair of Early 19th Century Framed Watercolors

A beautiful pair of early 19th Century paintings in watercolor and gouache, mounted onto paper borders that emulate French matting with a blank nameplate area faux-painted at the lower margin, framed in "provincial corner" frames with incised decorations and corner ornaments in a gilt finish under glass. The paintings are most likely maquettes for interior murals to be inset into panel moldings. The images depict classical ruins in landscapes with several figures in each, measuring 9-5/8" x 7-3/4". The sight size including the borders measures 2-1/4" x 10-1/2", and the frames overall measure 15-1/2" x 13-3/4". There is an old calling card taped to the back of one of them from McCutcheon's Antiques in Ligonier, PA stating that they are ca. 1810.
