936. A Pair of A George III Master Salt Boats by Peter & Ann Bateman and Peterson & Podie, London ca. 1796 and 1789

A matched pair of master salt boats of elegant elongated form with slightly pointed ends and reeded edges, resting on a flared ovoid bases. Interior with traces of gilt- wash. Exterior with family crest (rubbed from two centuries of polishing). First boat was made by Peter & Ann Bateman (London - reg. 1791) - son and daughter-in-law of the famous Hester Bateman, eighteenth century silversmith, who took over her husband's failing business and developed it to be one of the most important silversmith companies of that century. Second boat is by Abraham Peterson & Peter Podie, (London - reg. 1783), and is seven years earlier (1789) than the first boat, and might be a prototype Bateman's used in the later years. Nonetheless, it is apparent that the two boats were a pair for a long time. Both are appropriately marked with the hallmarks of the period and measure approx. 2½"H x 4"L x 2"W. Weight approx. 4.6 troy oz.
