2. Old Babylonian Clay Foundation Cone, ca. 2100 B.C.

Baked clay cones, or nails, were inscribed with dedicatory inscriptions, in many duplicates and embedded into the cavities of walls of great buildings in case the building was demolished so that future generations would know to whom to re-dedicate the building. This light tan cone with one large column of text is apprx 4-1/4"L.
