151. Master I.Z., after Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)

"The Circumcision". Woodcut on paper, created ca. 1505, with the artist monogram in the lower right and the artist's initials in the lower center margin, the image measuring approx. 11-1/2" x 8-1/4", and overall with the mat and frame approx. 18-1/2" x 15 . The image comes from Dürer's series, the Life of Mary as one of her seven sorrows. Note the cloaked figure of Mary standing off to the right and the infant Christ at the center of the composition.

During the second half of the 15th century, a group of brilliant engravers known only by their initials emerged in Germany. Among them are the Masters B.G., B.M., L.G.S., A.G., B.R., and W.H.
