234. Sandor Vago (American/Hungarian, 1887-1946)

Portrait of a man in a turban. Oil on canvas, signed in the lower left corner, framed, the canvas size measuring approx. 20-1/4" x 16", and with the framing overall approx. 23" x 19".

Portraiture was Sandor Vago's specialty. He was originally from Hungary, where he studied art in Budapest and later in Munich. After the first World War he immigrated to the Cleveland, which was by then developing a large population from Hungary. He became a member of the Cleveland Society of Artists, and operated a professional studio as a portrait painter. He painted in a confident and lively style and soon had commissions to paint many heads of institutions such as the Western Reserve Academy and the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, the Musical Arts Association at Severance Hall, General Electric Corporation, and Cleveland City Hall . He exhibited in over 25 Cleveland Museum of Art May Shows, the Cleveland Society of Artists, and had solo exhibitions in the best galleries of the time including Korner & Wood, Guenther's Gallery, and The Gage Gallery. He taught at the Cleveland School of Art from 1929-1935. This painting is a fine example of his energetic style.
