| 1113. An Elaborate Barrel Chair, ca. 17th/18th Century
A spade shaped barrel chair, raised on a pedestal base with four splayed legs terminating in scroll feet, joined with scrolled stretchers. The seat is covered with embossed leather with a flower and leaf pattern overall; the seat was hinged with leather straps, now worn through and separated. Brass nailheads surround the leather, and the carved portions are overall painted in blue with gilt ornamentation and floral sprigs. The back of the seat has a figural cartouche (Venetian) with a standing lion wearing a crown. It measures approx. 38"T x 35-1/2"W x 18"D. Because of the configuration of the base of the chair, it may have been used as part of a sedan chair or other conveyance. The base braces the chair against movement in any direction. The scale of the chair indicates that it may have also been made for a child's size. 1,500/2,500 Sold $1,092.50 back to catalog |
