1298. "Engraved in the Wood", A collection of wood engravings by George Mackley with an appreciation by Ruari McLean

London: Two-Horse Press, 1968. No. 132 of 300 copies printed, signed by the artist. Designed and printed in three colors by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press. With woodcuts in orange throughout text. The 68 plates are printed on fine paper. Issued in a box with engravings unbound, the text in wrappers. The whole has been made into sections and sewn, with the first three illustrations inserted within the text to act as "frontispieces" to the various sections. Endpapers of pale yellow Ingres paper, headbands of green and orange. Bound in dark green Chieftain morocco with a design of four fallings leaves running across both boards and the spine, in orange and tan leather, inlaid and onlaid. The veins of the leaves are tooled in gold. Tan lable at the bottom of the spine with a single line gold border, lettered. Binding signed CLH 86. Offered in a tav cloth calm shell case with applied leather title with gold embossed lettering. Fine.

Mackley was a highly regarded wood-engraver of the 1930's through the 1960's and was particularly known for his works on boats, architecture, and plants. In addition to illustrating books, he also wrote on wood-engraving.
