A delicate and pretty Japanese cloisonne vase, measuring approx. 4-3/4"H x 1-3/4" in diameter at the shoulder. Overall it is enameled in an iron red background, with one side minutely enameled depicting tiny birds and hanging flowers, and with two birds in flight on the other side. The neck and the foot are decorated with geometric repetitive patterns in complimentary colors.

A handsome Tibetan bronze ceremonial axe, ca. 19th Century, with a natural bronze and rubbed finish, measuring approx. 12-1/2"L x 6-1/4"W at the blade. The axe has three of the crown shaped finials commonly used in Tibetan metalwork, called "vagra" and the image of a bird's head with its beak splayed wide on the blade.

560. A Pair of Antique Japanese Champleve Vases
A pair of antique Japanese champleve vases, each measuring approx. 9-1/2"H x 6" in diameter at the widest point, in a bulbous shape set on a 3/4"H foot, with two dragon-face handles, stamped "Made In Japan" on the underside. The patterns on the sides are floral with birds between and are enameled in green, iron red, blue, white and pink. An interesting bit of "provenance" accompanies the lot, having been assembled by a former owner. It consists of a family photo of a Mr. John A. Freeman with his wife in front of a mantel on which these two are situated, and a composite of newspaper obituaries for Mr. Freeman dated September 12, 1935. An interesting anecdote referring to the apparent age of the pieces.

This group includes a two-piece baluster form container with a removable top, which serves as a vase and a lid for the container. The container features white floral decorations over pale yellow ground and measures approx. 5"T x 3"W. The second item is a cobalt blue enamel cloisonne casket with a hinged lid and four ball feet, decorated with stylized foliage in turquoise and white. Overall the piece measures approx. 2"T x 2-3/4"W x 4-3/4"L.

The interiors and the underside are glazed in a vivid leaf green and the exteriors depict snarling five-claw dragons around the body.

The body of the ewer measures approx. 3-1/4" in diameter at the widest point.

The foot is also decorated with an undulating design. Inside he base are calligraphic characters in blue underglaze.

A pretty 20th Century Japanese glazed porcelain plate in the Kutani manner, measuring approx. 12-1/2" in diameter x 2-1/4"H. The plate is fashioned in porcelain painted with overglaze enamels in yellow, blue, aqua, black and gilt with some white clouds at the top of the composition. The center of the bowl is sectioned into geometric shapes with a large white square in the center decorated with the image of an Iris. The outside back is decorated with the stylized images of three birds, and the center of the underside has an underglaze mark in aqua and black.

A large Oribe style glazed ceramic bowl in a 1"H foot, with two applied handles, measuring overall 12" in diameter x 7-1/4"H. The flaring bowl shape has four pinched parts at the top and has a slightly ribbed effect to the surface. It is hand painted in the traditional Oribe manner with a bold moss green glaze and black painted very fluid designs. The foot has a matte glaze surrounding it in a warm brown color. The underside is stamped with the maker's mark.
