836. A Lovely American Tall Case Clock


An attractive honey-color cherry wood tall case clock, 94"H x 18"W x 10-1/2"D. The hood consists of a straight molded cornice above a textured frieze with an arched glazed door. The glass is surrounded by a beaded interior rim. Inside is a polychrome painted face with Roman numerals and a painted moon phase dial. The trunk below has a glazed door inset in wood with a lock with key. The trunk sits on a paneled base with a small curvilinear apron and slightly flaring feet. This clock is a family heirloom hailing from Massachusetts. Though it has had restoration done to it over time, it is still a handsome and decorative piece of imposing size and appearance. The rods and weights accompany the clock.

An antique carved walnut armchair, in the manner of a chair seen in England and on the Continent, approx. ca. 1670, with a highly carved back, arms, and apron, and spiral twist uprights and stretchers, with pinecone carved finials at the top of the seat back. The chair has been reupholstered in a contemporary tapestry-weave fabric, but may have originally had caning in the seat and back. Overall it measures approx. 27"W x 51-1/2"H x 21"D, and 24"D to the ends of the arms.

An antique carved oak armchair, of large proportions, measuring approx. 45-1/2"H x 28"W x 23"D and 16" seat height. The warm brown tone wood has a semi-glossy newer finish and the mottled green leather upholstery is newer. The chair back has a highly carved panel at the top with a shield shape and foliage in relief flanked by the heads of two roaring lions at the top of the siderails. The arms curve out to a wide scroll and the carved front legs are large lion's paws. The leather is trimmed with antiqued brass nailheads all around the perimeter.

The elegant 19th Century mahogany dining table rests on eight heavy turned and reeded tapering legs on brass casters; the apron showcases a beautiful wood graining; the table with four extension leaves, three of them measuring 24"W and one is 22"W, overall the dimensions of the table without the leaves is approx. 29"H x 54"W x 62"L, with the leaves the length is apprx 156"L. Approx. 28.25"H. Secondary woods include oak, and tulip poplar. A lovely vintage china cabinet made by the Baker Furniture Company, measuring approx. 80"H x 59"W x 15"D with a three-section upper cabinet with glazed doors and fitted with shelves for displaying porcelains, over a solid door base, with a 2" step-back effect. The glass doors have mullions in an architectural pattern similar to George III china cabinets, and the base doors have inset inlay detailing.

This attractive Art Deco display cabinet is raised on four fluted, slightly tapered legs with brass feet; the base sparingly decorated with carved stylized foliate ornaments inside rectangles; the simple, yet elegantly understated frame of the cabinet supports four glass sides and top surrounded by a silver metal inset; with a sliding door on one side; the interior of the cabinet is fitted with a single glass shelf supported by a tapered pillar. The case fitted for illumination, making it a desirable piece for someone looking to accommodate a collection of artifacts or antiques. Overall the dimensions are approx. 64"T x 60"W x 29"D.

A set of six vintage walnut balloon back chairs, with straight fluted legs in the front, slightly splayed plain back legs, and a shaped frontrail. Each is deep button tufted in orange velvet with double self welting. Each measures approx. 35"H x 20"W x 17"D, with the seat height of approx. 18".

Carved oak armoire with three beveled mirrored doors. Center compartment open with one large shelf. Two side compartments have built-in shelves which can be adjusted. One long drawer under the center door, two short drawers at left and right. Carved crest above, overall raised on short cabriole feet with carved knees. Hardware appears to be replacements, added magnetic closures on two of three doors. Approx. 7'-11"T with crest, 6'-10" without, 5'-11"W x 1'-11"D.

A mahogany Pembroke style games table with an envelope folding top, tapering legs with casters, the legs detailed with inset banding, with a single drawer with a hinged handle, and with a pretty inlaid edge banding on the outside surfaces. Overall it measures approx. 31" x 31" x 28-3/4"H when open, and 22" x 22" closed. The top swivels 1/4 turn and the four triangular hinged sections open. The swivel allows the leaves to be supported by the base when in use. The triangular sections are hollow, which is why a large crack has formed through the top; inside are circular indentations to hold gaming pieces which are also cracked. Overall it is a very delicate and pretty piece of furniture.

An American Empire style walnut wood flip top games table or tea table, 34-3/4" x 37" x 31"H, with an irregular wavy shape to the top edge, and a burlwood veneered 4-3/8"H skirt, supported by a lyre-shaped pedestal on a rectangular base with four curved feet and small white casters. The top is hinged in the middle. When folded in the top swivels around so the piece can be up against a wall when not in use for gaming.
