Remnants of woven cloth packed with mud, "rope" wrapping around the figure, wrapping the body with magical substances. Full bodied lips, half shut eyes and the stomach being hollowed out to hold a special substance to protect the user from evil spirits or to control one's destiny. 497. A Phuungu Fetish, Democratic Republic of Congo, Formerly Zaire A carved wood sculpture of a standing female figure with brown patina. Bound with cloth at waist. Arms are tied with feathers and satchels, containing magical substances. Approx. 16-1/2"T. Fetishes were protective figures used by individuals, families, or whole communities to destroy or weaken evil spirits, prevent or cure illnesses, repel bad deeds, solemnize contracts or oath-taking, and decide arguments.
