Carved wood statue with black patina rubbed bare in ares. Remnants of woven cloth packed with mud, "rope" wrapping around the figure, wrapping the body with magical substances. Full bodied lips, half shut eyes and the stomach being hollowed out to hold a special substance to protect the user from evil spirits or to control one's destiny. Approx. 12"T.

A carved wood sculpture of a standing female figure with brown patina. Bound with cloth at waist. Arms are tied with feathers and satchels, containing magical substances. Approx. 16-1/2"T. Fetishes were protective figures used by individuals, families, or whole communities to destroy or weaken evil spirits, prevent or cure illnesses, repel bad deeds, solemnize contracts or oath-taking, and decide arguments. A diviner or holy person would activate the statue, using magical substances. Fetishes gained power and were effective because people believed in them.

Carved female, seated. The distinctive style of the Attye (also called Akye) include more bulbous and muscular limbs, with a ryhthm of bulges and constrictions. Other features include fine coiffure and geometric hands and face. Cord tied around the waist has a cloth in the front and back. Overall approx. 2'9"T.
