569. A Large Oribe Style Ceramic Glazed Bowl

A large Oribe style glazed ceramic bowl in a 1"H foot, with two applied handles, measuring overall 12" in diameter x 7-1/4"H. The flaring bowl shape has four pinched parts at the top and has a slightly ribbed effect to the surface. It is hand painted in the traditional Oribe manner with a bold moss green glaze and black painted very fluid designs. The foot has a matte glaze surrounding it in a warm brown color. The underside is stamped with the maker's mark.

Futura Oribe was one of the most influential tea masters in Japan. He introduced a feeling of modernism through his approach to ceramics, compared to the relative austereness dominant at the time. His use of unusual and organic shapes, and boldy colored glazes and designs was such a departure that it was influential far beyond just the ceramic and tea ceremony circles.
