723. An Antique Topsy-Turvy Doll, ca. 1930-40

An unusual antique double ended doll, with papier mache mask faces, composite backs to the heads, stuffed textile bodies, gusseted shoulders, measuring approx. 19"L overall. The doll is comprised of two lady doll bodies joined at the waist, so the costume of each covers the other. One doll face depicts a black woman with a headdress, a long floral dress with a ruffled hem and an apron. The other depicts a white woman with a long red dress with pale blue ruffles, wearing a yellow headdress and a straw basket on top. The faces are both molded in the same shape, and are stapled to the composite backs of the heads. There is a printed paper stamp on the end of the black doll's apron strings that says "Consumo" and "Seda....Brasil".
