846. A Hide-A-Way Writing Desk, ca. 19th Century

An unusual American Federal "Aaron Burr" style writing desk in the shape of an oval drum table on four scrolled legs with casters. The shape is reminiscent a cellarette or a wine cooler on the outside. The exterior of the drum is detailed with rippling applied ornaments. The hinged top opens at the center to make a writing surface. There is a small drawer with a lock mechanism and escutcheon below the writing surface and scrolling apron surrounding the drawer. The opposing side of the form swings out on a hinge forming a small rounded-back seat. It has a patent label dated 1854 from Stephen Hedges on the interior lid. Overall it measures 33-1/4" x 25-1/2" x 29-1/4"H.
