193. An Early Continental Carved Wooden Figure

An early Continental carved wooden figure, probably ecclesiastical in nature, of a standing female figure with a classical appearance, on a mound base on which sits a small figure (most of the head missing). The figure is carved from a solid piece of wood and is slightly concave at the back. It is braced standing by a wood flange held on with a rusty iron bracket. The arms are missing, and there is the remains of a metal peg on one shoulder. There are also remnants of metal pegs on the head, probably indicating that it had a halo at one time. The surface has the remnants of a gesso layer, and some flakes of pigment. The nature of the small figure carved into the base cannot be determined, though a human-form hand remains. Overall it stands 32"H x 8"D x 10"W.
