560. A Pair of Antique Japanese Champleve Vases

A pair of antique Japanese champleve vases, each measuring approx. 9-1/2"H x 6" in diameter at the widest point, in a bulbous shape set on a 3/4"H foot, with two dragon-face handles, stamped "Made In Japan" on the underside. The patterns on the sides are floral with birds between and are enameled in green, iron red, blue, white and pink. An interesting bit of "provenance" accompanies the lot, having been assembled by a former owner. It consists of a family photo of a Mr. John A. Freeman with his wife in front of a mantel on which these two are situated, and a composite of newspaper obituaries for Mr. Freeman dated September 12, 1935. An interesting anecdote referring to the apparent age of the pieces.
