682. A Magnificent Double-Handled Amphora, ca. 17th/18th Century

A magnificent double-handled Amphora, ca. 17th/18th Century, fashioned in mixed metals, measuring approx. 20-1/2"H x 12" in diameter at the widest, plus the handles. The body is formed in copper and the handles are of cast bronze with applied beaten silver decorations. It has a dark verdegris/black finish over most of the surfaces. The upper handles have a relief shape of leaves and fruit, and the sides around the rim are the image of a ram with horns. Below the foliage is the image of the head and shoulders of a classical woman above a bird with wings spread. Below each handle is another handle with a duck head and foliate embellishments. The base is also decorated in relief with repeating classical motifs.
