29. A Painting Initialed "W.B." After William Henry Bartlett (British, 1809-1854)

"Catskill Mountain House". Oil on board, initialed "W.B." in the lower left corner, framed under glass with a reverse-painted gold detail around the perimeter, the panel size approx. 5" x 6-3/4", and with the framing overall approx. 12" x 13-1/2". Painted after Bartlett's "The Two Lakes and the Mountain House on the Catskills", and initialed as an homage to the artist by an unknown hand.

William Henry Bartlett, an English painter, first traveled to North America in 1836 and began producing colored drawings of views popular American and European travelers. American Scenery, a two-volume compendium of 118 steel engravings of these views, was published simultaneously in London and New York with descriptions by Romantic novelist N.P. Willis. Forty-seven views of the Hudson River region are included.
