49. Four Portraits After Self Portraits by Rubens, Van Dyck, Michelangelo, and Titian, ca. 19th Century
Pigment on a thick paperboard, no signatures found, apparently by two different artists, all framed in a heavily carved and gilt Italian frame with four oval openings. Left to right; Rubens, Van Dyck, Michelangelo, and Titian. The images are all done after self-portraits by these artists. Oval sight size apprx 4-3/4" x 3-1/2", each. Overall in Italian hand carved, gesso and gilt frame apprx 17" x 33". There are partial labels on the back of each in Cyrillic; green label has partial name of ELENY GRIGORYENY, beige label has the word "COUNT".

"The Gypsy Fortune Teller". Oil on wood panel, approx. 16" x 11-3/4", in a fancy period gilt frame overall approx. 21-1/2" x 17-1/4". There are some inscriptions on the verso of the panel but with the darkening of age they are almost illegible, but probably are the title and Shayer's name. There is a nice hand-lettered gilt nameplate on the front of the frame. Overall a very attractive and decorative antique presentation.

Carrying firewood on a country lane. Oil on canvas, no signature found, the canvas size measuring 17-1/4" x 22-1/2". The painting is framed in an older frame with an ornate relief pattern and gilded in a dark brown tone, overall approx. 22-1/2" x 27-1/2". This scene has the typical earmarks of compositions by Stark, with sunlight breaking through a darkly wooded landscape with a cottage partially concealed in the trees, a country lane down which the woodsman walks and some livestock in the right foreground.

The title and the artist's name are written on the verso of the canvas and "Rose Hedger wife of Thomas Bell" is incised into the bottom stretcher. An interesting note is the image of a small dog at the right of the chair.

Oil on board, not signed. Graphite marks on verso. The image measures approx. 9-1/2" x 4"W, overall in a Gothic style gilt wood frame 17-1/2" x 6-1/2". Very nice quality painting; a copy of a 16th century angel, with gold leafed background, set into an attractive architectural frame. This is likely a piece that was made for sale as a Grand Tour souvenir devotional object. There are some rubbed away inscriptions on verso, one word of which appears to be "Firenze" (Florence).
