1015. Three Framed Glazed Ceramic Tiles of Scenes From "Le Mort D'Arthur"


Three modern glazed ceramic tiles after those designed for Minton in 1875 by John Moyr Smith (1839-1912). Smith, a very popular designer for the Mintons, created a set of twelve tiles depicting scenes from Mallory's "Le Mort D'Arthur" which was a very popular subject at the time and maintains its appeal today. Originally they were produced in different colors and were used for decoration of a fireplace surround in a full set. This group is done in soft brown, black and grey. These Arts and Crafts design tiles measure 6" x 6", and are framed in dark wood frames overall measuring 7-7/8" x 7-7/8".

A lot of four antique faience plates from Venice, consisting of two pairs of plates with similar hand painted designs, each approx. 8" to 8-1/4" in diameter, each with a creamy glaze and hand painted images of multicolor flowers. Each plate has a spring wire hanger attached to the back.

A rare three piece Meissen figural, fit together at the base, depicting a bacchanalian celebration. The largest piece depicts Bacchus holding a cluster of grapes and a chalice walking in front of a tree trunk. The second piece represents a woman (Ariadne?) attending to Cupid drawing back his bow seated on a barrel while another cherub sips from a bowl seated on the mound base. Two doves spoon at her feet. The smallest piece represents a cherub with a smiling expression and holding a small dish of wine having tumbled below the others. Bacchus measures 11-5/8"H, the central piece measures 9-3/4"H and the smallest 3-1/8"H.

A wonderful Meissen figural of a man seated on a tree trunk shearing a small sheep, on a mound base, marked on the underside in cobalt blue underglaze. The figural measures approx. 8-3/4"H. The man is dressed with an aqua tunic with ruffled shoulders over a flounced white shirt rolled up at the sleeves. His taupe britches have delicate striped details, gilt buttons and an orange ribbon on one knee. He wears a black hat and shoes, also with orange ribbon and bow trim. There are gilt details overall.

A beautifully executed hand decorated porcelain figural of a flute player on a circular gilt metal base with four knob feet, overall measuring approx. 9-1/2"H and at the base 4-3/4" in diameter. The young man is dressed in an elaborately decorated and colorful costume. He stands in front of a marble half-column on which sits a fancy urn. His costume is accented with flowers and other patterns, bows and ruffles. The porcelain is marked on the underside with a blue factory mark and the word "Dresden" in black script. The underside is mostly unglazed and has absorbed soils. This piece is extremely well decorated in minute detail.

A fine pair of Chelsea figurals, one of a man with a bagpipe and the other of a woman playing a lute. Each measures approx. 10"H x 9"W x 6"D and is marked with an anchor mark in gilt on the back. Each rests on the base of a tree who's branches are elaborately adorned with bocage, and each stands on a similar rococo shaped base. The figure of a lamb stands next to the lady and a dog sits next to the man. The figures are extremely well hand decorated with vivid colors and complex patterns.

Two charming hand decorated porcelain figurals, one depictiing a man in his night-time garb in a posture of listening and the other a woman carrying a chocolate set on a tray. Each measures approx. 9"H. They are delicately decorated in French Blue and gilt details and both have a green anchor mark in the underglaze.
