380. A Vintage Louis Vuitton Wardrobe

A vintage Louis Vuitton wardrobe, approx. 43" x 22" x 21-1/2", with the trademark brown and gold logo canvas covering, wooden slats with the inscription "Louis Vuitton...Paris...London" impressed, with tooled leather binding on the edges with the repeating logo, with thick leather carrying handles on either side with "LV" impressed into the brasses and L. Vuitton impressed in the leather. Most of the nailheads also have the Vuitton name stamped. There are several travel stickers on the outside from various destinations and a former owner's name painted on one end. The inside is covered in a cream color textured Koroseal-type fabric, with six drawers on the right and a fold-out hanger apparatus to the left with a removable briefcase type container below. The drawers have stamped leather handles; three have strapping inside woven with the name of Louis Vuitton and the top and the bottom have removable partitions. The top drawer has a lock, but is lacking the key. The briefcase has a leather handle and snapping straps and its interior is covered in wool flannel. The hanging apparatus is in wood, silver metal and shirred with cream cotton sateen fabric; includes the original hangers. Many of the interior parts are also emblazoned with the Vuitton name. Under the hinged flip up top is the serial number 847977 and "Avenue Marceau 28 Paris".

Known as Wardrobe Trunks or Traveling Wardrobes, these trunks are some of the largest and heaviest ever made and are designed to stand on end for packing or open use. One half of the trunk, usually the right half, is filled with drawers while the other half has clothes hangers, usually a shoe box, and sometimes an ironing board and even a flat iron. Pity the people who had to move these monsters around, most are heavy even when empty! The wardrobe trunks have become more and more popular just in the last few years. Many are restored and then used in bedrooms of small apartments as a combination chest of drawers and closet. Most of them were made in the 1920s and 1930s with some going back nearer the turn of the century. Note how the upper part of the left half opens up to allow better access to the hangers. The two chrome rods in the same area telescope out to give the hangers more room when the trunk is open.
