290. Andre Lucien (Contemporary, ca. 1993)

"I Know U Got Soul". Mixed media on paper, signed and titled verso, dated 1993, the paper size 30" x 22", and framed in a gilt frame with a linen mat and a gilt fillet under plexiglass overall 39" x 31-1/4". The foamcore board which was used as a backing board for fitting the painting also has a signed and dated drawing by the artist in blue marker. Please see detail photographs for this image.

Throughout his work, Lucien has taken a direct and challenging approach to ideas about race in America with explorations of such themes as Gangsterism, Slavery, and Sexuality. He uses iconography and symbolism to provoke the viewer's insight into history of Black/White race relations through America's real history and his own experience as a black male coming of age in urban America (NYC). His use of bright colors and composition lure the viewer in only to realize the complex and fragile nature of this ongoing struggle-and to transcend our familiar understanding of this domain. ANDRE LUCIEN aka LESS aka LUCIEN has been on the street art scene since 1983 and his work is heavily influenced by this genre. He was born in Trinidad and Tobago in 1965. He has been part of many group exhibitions mostly with other artists on the Lower East Side of Manhattan where he lives and works today. andrelucien.org
